The Big Lick. The Star City. The Capital of the Blue Ridge. Roanoke’s many names offer glimpses into the city’s 185-year history.  Originally settled thanks to large salt marshes that attracted big game animals, much of Roanoke’s growth didn’t arrive until 1882 when the railroad made it a crossroads. The City of Roanoke was officially established in 1884.

Today, the star city’s main attractions are its stunning natural environment, central Appalachian location, diverse and numerous festivals, and an ever growing arts community.
