The recent paintings mark a return to North and Jennings Creek in Arcadia. This location is known for pristine trout streams and swimming holes and is within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. My family took camping trips there when we were children and I have returned there as a teacher with groups of high school and adult students over the years and to take day trips for my own work. Formally, I use shape and color to articulate the scene.

I come upon subject matter during my many walks in the neighborhood. In early morning or late evening, the natural light creates dramatic effects of high key color, light and shadow. I'm attracted to this visual drama.

I also find theatrical light happening in the house during different times of day, which transforms the objects around the kitchen sink or the view from one room to another. I find narrative possibilities by setting up old toys in a tin dollhouse or in a homemade diorama with cardboard walls and doll furniture. The figures then tell their own story. The sculptures start out as small macquettes, riffing off of familiar toys with simple mechanisms. As commissions or pubic art, they are built to monumental scale, from 9' to 40' tall.
