Painting is about connection to place and to imagination. When I paint outdoors, I’m connected through my senses to a particular place—to the heat, the rain, the sound of birds or traffic—and also to the history of the place and the memories embedded in the landscape. I am also connected to the geography of my mind and imagination, working that pilgrimage from a literal place to a place imagined in color and abstracted shapes.

I am currently exploring abstraction and working in a variety of media, including collage. I’ve made artists books and sketchbooks for years and have filled commercial sketchbooks with drawings. Experiments, exploring media, and following trains of thought make me happy. The best work comes when I least expect it.

I am a member of the American Impressionist Society and have studied art and bookbinding at the Corcoran School of Art, Pyramid Atlantic, Penland, Paper and Book Intensive, and the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia. I lived in Maryland for over 30 years and relocated to Roanoke, Virginia, last year where I live with my son and two dogs.
