My ideas are varied and interwoven with the colors and textures of nature playing a large role. Memories, impressions and personal symbols all figure in as well, as do elements of pure abstraction. There is interplay in my work between appreciation of the natural world and the desire to organize and manipulate the medium. I use a variety of techniques for creating composition with a variety of techniques, making marks and laying down areas of color, including some I learned 30+ years ago in printmaking and pottery. I build up many layers of encaustic, scrape, gouge, and remove parts of the layers so that underlying bits emerge. One of my preferred techniques is to add accretions to create the textures I love so much. Oftentimes, I add found elements to create actual texture and intrigue. The result is a surface that is complex in texture and shifts in opaque and transparent color. These techniques attend to the correlation between the organic look and feel of my work and the process of making it.

Gina began experimenting with the ancient techniques of Encaustic in 2006 (this medium dates as far back to the 5th Century B.C. and is the most organic and archival of mediums.) Each layer of medium involves fusing together numerous layers of molten beeswax and Damar resin, often with the addition of pigments. The surface is scraped, scratched, or rubbed with pigment to create various effects.

Unlike other mediums, encaustic has sculptural, mysterious, and corporeal components to it.

Gina is a Roanoke, Va. native and has been creating for as long as she can remember. In later years she continued her journey having the good fortune of having been mentored and taught by some of the finest of artists. Her recent works are explorations in combining numerous techniques along with the Encaustic and wax mediums to create the atmospheric and textural qualities which are often symbolic to her works. She has assembled bits of her lifelong learning experiences and personal intuition to create her own artistic voice. Louthian-Stanley's works represent physical and emotional sensation that carries the viewer into their own significant narrative.

In 2023, Gina was invited to be one of the 26 International Instructors for Painting with Fire, based in Mulranny Ireland. She’ll be teaching again for 2024-25! Since retiring from teaching for 20+ years, Gina is excited to be teaching art to children and adults helping them find their voice. Gina has received many awards and honors, been featured in several publications,  taught nationally, and internationally, along with many works collected and shown nationally and internationally. Gina’s works are  included in several museum collections across the country. Please see her website for more information.
